Thoughts on Teaching

I came out of college as a Psychology major with a minor in Creative Writing. A what do you do with that kind of major along the lines of an English major which would have been my second choice anyways. So, no matter how you look at it. I would have come out of college in pretty much the same employable state.  It is hard to remember all of the things I was interesed in back then but they included  mental health, writing, diversity, child development, non-profit organizations, art, social work, teaching poetry to low income children, and  literature. I had already given up on being a vetinarian, an oceanographer and a biologist after my high school math teacher told me to stop taking math. (I mangaed to get my BA with only taking one statistics class.) Many of my new choices involved Grad school, which I wasn't quite ready for at the time.  Near graduation, when nurses were in especially high demand and getting large bonuses. I contemplated becoming a nurse. It was only for a few minutes, seeing as I don't really like blood. A few of my friends thought I should become a teacher. One even heard about a school on public radio  where the teacher would keep the same children for five years. He thought that I would be perfect. I wasn't convinced. My sister was a kindergarten teacher and left the profession. My mother always wanted to be a teacher, but couldn't go to college. As with most young adults, I wasn't sure of many things and was interested in everything. Most of my interests revolved around the one thing you are never suposed to say in a job interview, "I want to help people" It was almost as if it was in my genes. too be continued...

Cathy and I are feeling a huge learning curve today. I am up for the challenge. Learning is hard work. As a teacher, it is a good reminder of what our children go through each day. Not only in acedemics, but in navigating in the world with out experience. The good thing is I was able to get back into PBworks and created a blog. Hurray for me.
